The Magic of Halloween

I have such a love for Halloween. I am hoping that by the end of this, you are going to join me in the joy of Halloween! There is something about it. I feel the spark of enthusiasm and I jump right into it. Halloween is so much more than costumes and candy. It’s a season of magic, fun and family bonding that fills me with happiness. As I watch my kids enjoying Halloween, it makes me fall even harder for it. My daughter Ella also loves Halloween. She just left the room telling me how much she loves the whole vibe of Halloween.

I want to challenge you to find reasons to love Halloween, to enjoy it and to get into it. Humor me and read about my love below and then report back to me about how you are feeling!

You can be anyone you want to be!

I have had so much fun over the years dressing up and being the queen of hearts, a bunny, a kitty cat and most recently a pink lady! As a kid I remember dressing up as a rich lady and a dancer from Flashdance. You can be whoever you want to be on Halloween. If you have always wanted to be a ballerina, Halloween is your chance to shine. Do it up and have fun with your costume. If you are a mom like me, your kids will get a kick out of you dressing up. If you are my child, then I have failed you and you don’t even know who a pink lady is. I cannot believe that I haven’t watched Grease with my kids! It is my all-time favorite movie along with Clueless and Legally Blonde. I need a movie date with my kids asap! Ella wants me to note here that she knows what a pink lady is but my 12 year old Lillie has no clue who a pink lady is.

Mom tip:

Think about your favorite characters and have fun with it! Help your kids with suggestions. Don’t be shy! This is the time to have fun being Elle Woods from Legally Blonde!

Collaborate with your family and/or friends!

Not only can you be anyone you want to be, but you can also include your family and/or your friends in the costume. This year my husband was a T-bird, and I was a pink lady. I wanted my friends to be pink ladies too, but I wasn’t organized enough, and they had already bought themselves costumes. If you get on it early enough, you can enjoy a fun theme with your friends. My family doesn’t tend to agree on a theme, but I love seeing family themed costumes. My daughter and her friends dress up together every year. This year they are going to be baseball players together. Last year they were Winnie the Pooh characters and the year before that they were the Hocus Pocus witches. Have some fun and include people! The more the merrier in a group costume!

Mom tip:

If you want to include people, catch them in the conversation before they buy a costume! Get organized earlier than I tend to! Put an alert on your phone in September next year to discuss costumes with your family and/or friends.

It’s a time of creativity!

I am having so much fun decorating my house for Halloween! I need more decorations! I just ordered more! It can be addictive! I can be creative with my decorations inside and outside and I can also have fun with pumpkin carving! You can make your pumpkin anything you want! I decided to do a cat this year, but I wanted to do a Cinderella coach pumpkin. I needed two little, tiny pumpkins to make that happen so I will remember that for next year. You can paint your pumpkin. You can add glitter to it! This is your time to be creative. A Halloween painting night would have been a fun idea! I’ll store that idea for next year! Get creative and have some fun! It is good for us, our spouses and our kids to get our creative juices flowing. I loved seeing my mom have fun creating her Buffalo Bills pumpkin.

Mom tips:

Buy stuff early or late on sale! The Halloween decorations come out early and I would grab them when you see them. I went back to buy dragons yesterday and they were long gone! Everything is on sale right now and it’s a good time to buy stuff on clearance for Halloween and you can store it for next year!

If you don’t like messes: Use a plastic tablecloth for carving pumpkins so that when you are done you can fold it all up and throw the pumpkin guts away! You can also skip carving and just do some painting but then you don’t get the delicious pumpkin seeds!

Make some Halloween traditions!

I love traditions. They feel like a warm hug to me. My daughter’s friend has the most amazing Halloween house. We visit it every year and my daughter is going over there for Halloween. At my house my youngest daughter has her friends over every year. This year it has expanded to her whole lunch table and I’m loving this. I am here for as much Halloween fun as we can have. Her friends come over and have dinner and then they all go trick or treating together. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year.

Mom tip:

Start a Halloween tradition that you look forward to every year. It can be having a Halloween party, trick or treating, going to a pumpkin patch, or having a Halloween movie night! Every year my friend watches Harry Potter around Halloween. Make a tradition and make special Halloween memories.

Embrace the magic of Halloween

As much as you hear me go on and on about how much I love summer, I do love me some Halloween too! Cozy sweaters, warm drinks, costumes and pumpkin everything. I’ve made pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pancakes and pumpkin cookies. Next up will be pumpkin muffins! I love pumpkins, costumes, candy and trick or treating. I love bringing friends together. I love seeing all my neighbors handing out candy to the kids. My neighbors make bonfires and sit outside and hand out candy. It is a wonderful community event before everyone starts hibernating for winter.

You don’t have to go all out for Halloween. A couple of decorations, a pumpkin and some candy and you are all set. I want to challenge all of you to find reasons to love this season of Halloween. I have had so many people tell me that they don’t like Halloween, and they don’t like the meaning behind it. I would like to suggest that you find reasons to enjoy things. Embrace Halloween and go have some fun!

Mom tip:

Embrace the little things and find reasons to enjoy Halloween!

I would love to hear from you:

What is your favorite part of Halloween?

What are you or your kids dressing up as?

Extra mom tip:

Have a meeting spot in case little ones get lost. If your kids are as old as mine have them carry their phone in case you get separated.

However your family celebrates, I hope this Halloween brings you joy, laughter and plenty of sweet moments. Happy Halloween from our family to yours! How did I do? Did I spread some Halloween magic?

Laughing, Learning, Loving,
